Bio sculpture gel manicure: golden silver

My favourite colour yet! I’ve found salons near me don’t seem to have much selection in Shellac colours, going for the safe pinks and reds which are not my style. Beauty2U in Bruntsfield do a lot of gel colours though. Which pleases me greatly.

This one, called ‘golden silver’, is a very pretty warm silver. Lovely and flattering!

Thank you Kiehls (centella asiatica recovery balm)

Kiehls, I thank you.

Every so often my skin decides it wants to go rogue, develop an allergic reaction to everything I put on it (even products I’ve been using with no issue), and becomes dry as a desert. I think this time the thing that set it off was some unexpected sun. Ooh, my skin was not happy about it!

Thankfully, Kiehls centella asiatica recovery balm came to my rescue again! Two days of using this wonder product has soothed my poor itchy, tight, flaky and dry skin…returning it to pretty much normal. Phew! Crisis averted!!

From my brief stint as a student of aromatherapy, I remember that centella asiatica is one of the super carrier oils, to be added to blends for inflamed and reactive skin along with a less expensive carrier (such as jojoba or sweet almond). Does the job, anyway!

Keratin blow dry booked

I’m not a huge fan of my hair.  Oh sure, once it’s been washed and blow-dried by a professional, or even after I’m attacked it with some hair straighteners, it can look kinda nice.  But on an average day, when I’ve woken up just in time to jump in the shower and run out to class, it looks a mess.  There’s a wee wave to it at the front that doesn’t look cute, as waves should be obliged by law to be.  The second there is a drop of moisture in the air it rears its ugly head.

I’ve finally booked myself in for a keratin blow-dry (aka Brazilian blow-dry), super-expensive but hopefully worth it!  I phoned 4 salons this morning and the girl I spoke to at Pride was the nicest; and they were also the most reasonable in price!

Now this may be controversial, but I have had few good experiences with a chain hairdressers.  I’ve had my hair ruined at Vidal Sassoon in Glasgow by a man with an undercut and paes (the wee ringlets Orthodox Jewish men wear).  Cheynes staff in Bruntsfield have been horribly rude to me.  I am a fan of the independant salon; I’ve been a loyal customer at Emma Hall Hair for years and wouldn’t get my hair cut or coloured anywhere else.  So I was happy to find an independant salon who could offer the same treatment.

So on Tuesday afternoon, will I be leaving the salon looking like this?  Oh one can only dream…

Sweet smells bearing fruit

20110822-204425.jpg

This is my favourite time of year, as summer turns to autumn. The air smells sweet still.

I like cosy jumpers, tweed, tartan rugs and mugs of steaming chai. Bring on September!

But I’ll miss the seasonal produce summer brings at the Farmers Market. The strawberries, raspberries, and sweet sugar snap peas. The French beans, which I still call haricots verts. I suppose you can take the girl out of French school, but you can’t take the French school out of the girl.

I think I’ll make a summery soup tomorrow with the haricots and the lovely pineapple mint from Brenda Leddy at Stichill dairies.
